Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Chimney Cleaning in Newport Beach, CA | Walnut Chimney
We provide independent Gelco chimney cleaning and service across Newport Beach, including Balboa Peninsula, Balboa Island, Dover Shores, and Newport Coast. Our Gelco work here is different for one reason: we repair what we find, using the right material for the job, not whatever a dealer network hands us. Most Newport Beach homes with Gelco inserts or prefab fireboxes need more than a sweep, they need salt-corrosion fixes, gasket replacement, or flue remediation behind the unit. Call (855) 341-3461 for a free estimate.

Walnut Chimney is an independent Gelco service provider. We are not manufacturer-affiliated, not dealer-tied, and not in the business of selling you a replacement you don’t need. Russ Dempsey leads our crew, and he’s been working flues long enough to know that a Gelco unit in a beach-adjacent Newport Beach home fails differently than the same unit ten miles inland.
Why Newport Beach Residents Choose Us for Gelco Service
We work on Gelco gas inserts and prefab firebox assemblies every week, which means we know where they fail and what to do about it before it becomes a bigger repair. Rusted damper pivots off Marine Avenue, cracked refractory panels in Newport Coast fireboxes, millivolt pilots that won’t stay lit in Dover Shores, we’ve seen each one enough times to quote it accurately and fix it the same visit in most cases.
Russ grew up off Amar Road in Walnut and spent his early years doing fireplace retrofits on older ranch homes across the San Gabriel Valley before focusing full-time on chimneys. He’s been working flues for going on two decades now. He’s the guy neighbors call when an inspection turns up something the last tech missed, and he brings that same eye to every Gelco unit we service in Newport Beach.
We source correct gaskets, glass, and damper hardware from independent suppliers rather than relying on a dealer network. If an OEM Gelco part is still available, we use it. If it’s discontinued or backordered, we use a quality aftermarket equivalent and tell you exactly what we’re installing and why. No mystery parts, no markup games. See our broader Gelco sales & service capabilities for how we handle units across Orange County.

Common Gelco Chimney Cleaning Problems We Solve in Newport Beach
- Salt-corroded damper pivots and cap screens. The marine layer off the Pacific doesn’t just fog your windows, it eats at Gelco insert surround trim, cap screens, and damper pivots. We regularly see dampers seized shut within a season or two on Balboa Peninsula homes. We free them, replace the hardware, and treat the metal to slow the next round of rust.
- Standing-pilot millivolt assemblies that drop out. Older Gelco gas inserts use millivolt standing-pilot controls. After a few seasons of marine-layer humidity working on thermopile and thermocouple contacts, the pilot refuses to stay lit. We clean the contacts, test the millivolt output, and replace components only when they actually fail, not because a checklist says so.
- Glazed creosote behind insert retrofits in Balboa Island cottages. Narrow unlined brick flues in original 1920s-1950s cottages accumulate hardened, glazed creosote that a standard sweep won’t remove. When a Gelco insert sits in front of one of these flues, the problem compounds. We chemically treat and mechanically remove what we can, then tell you plainly whether a reline is needed.
- Cracked refractory panels in Newport Coast prefab fireboxes. Newer custom builds in Newport Coast often have Gelco factory-built prefab fireboxes. The refractory panels inside crack over time, and failed gaskets let creosote and moisture reach the outer steel jacket. We inspect, replace panels and gaskets where feasible, and quote replacement when the jacket itself is compromised.
- Multi-flue cap damage from salt exposure. Gelco multi-flue caps on larger homes take the brunt of coastal wind and salt. We see corroded screens and rusted mounting hardware on homes from Dover Shores to Newport Hills. We replace cap hardware with corrosion-resistant aftermarket components when the OEM part isn’t available anymore.
Gelco Service in Newport Beach: What Local Conditions Mean for Your Equipment
Balboa Island’s original 1920s-1950s cottages were built with narrow unlined brick flues, which means a Gelco insert dropped into one of those chimneys needs a camera-level inspection and often a reline before the first burn of the season. This isn’t true for Gelco in Irvine or Tustin, and it sure isn’t true in Yorba Linda. It’s a Newport Beach problem specific to the beach-adjacent housing stock on Balboa Island and parts of the Peninsula. On one Balboa Island cottage off Marine Avenue, we pulled a Gelco gas insert from an original unlined brick flue and found glazed creosote and a rusted damper pivot that had frozen open. We swept and chemically treated the flue, freed and replaced the damper hardware, and recommended a reline before the homeowner fired the insert again. The unit relit on the first try after we cleaned the thermopile contacts.
What this means for Gelco owners in Newport Beach is simple: if your insert was retrofitted into an older chimney, or your prefab firebox has been sitting in salt air for more than a few winters, the cleaning isn’t the whole job. It’s the starting point. A clean flue behind a failing firebox doesn’t make the firebox safe. We inspect before we clean, clean what needs cleaning, and tell you straight if there’s a condition that needs correcting first.
Gelco Models & Products We Service in Newport Beach
We service the full range of Gelco equipment found in Newport Beach homes:
- Gelco gas fireplace inserts with millivolt standing-pilot controls, common in 1960s-1980s tract homes in Dover Shores and Newport Hills.
- Gelco factory-built prefab fireboxes with multi-flue caps, common in Newport Coast custom builds and larger Peninsula homes.
- Gelco direct-vent gas insert units, increasingly common in newer Newport Coast construction.
- Gelco wood-burning insert shells with refractory brick liners, found in some older Peninsula and Balboa Island homes.
For parts, we use OEM Gelco components where they’re still available for pilot assemblies, gaskets, and glass. For discontinued millivolt components and cap hardware, we use quality aftermarket equivalents sourced from suppliers we’ve worked with for years. We keep common Gelco gaskets and pilot components on our trucks for faster Newport Beach turnaround, so most repairs don’t require a second visit.

AfterGelco Service Pricing in Newport Beach
Gelco chimney cleaning in Newport Beach depends on what we find when we look at the unit and the flue behind it. A standard sweep and cleaning runs differently than a cleaning plus pilot repair on a Gelco gas insert, and a Balboa Island insert in front of a glazed unlined flue will cost more than a straightforward prefab firebox in Newport Coast.
Factors that affect your quote:
- Whether it’s a gas or wood-burning Gelco unit
- Condition of the flue behind the insert (unlined brick, glazed creosote, damaged liner)
- Whether gaskets, damper hardware, or pilot components need replacement
- Access to the unit and roof cap on homes with multi-story construction
Your free estimate includes a camera inspection where access allows, and we’ll show you what we found before we recommend anything. If your flue is clean and the unit is functioning, we’ll say so and won’t sell you a liner you don’t need. Call (855) 341-3461 for an exact quote on your Newport Beach Gelco unit.

FAQs – Gelco Chimney Cleaning in Newport Beach
My Gelco gas insert in Dover Shores won’t stay lit – is that the salt air?
Most likely yes, or at least partly. The marine layer pushes moisture into standing-pilot millivolt assemblies, corroding thermopile and thermocouple contacts until the pilot drops out or refuses to hold. We clean the contacts, test the millivolt output, and replace only the components that fail. It’s an incredibly common Dover Shores problem. Call (855) 341-3461 and we’ll diagnose it in one visit.
Does a Gelco insert in a Balboa Island cottage need a reline?
Often yes. The original 1920s-1950s cottages on Balboa Island commonly have narrow unlined brick flues that fail modern safety standards. A Gelco insert in front of one of those flues doesn’t fix the flue. We recommend a camera inspection before the first burn, and a reline if the flue shows glazed creosote, gaps, or deterioration. Better to know before the season than after a chimney fire.
Can you clean hardened creosote out of a Gelco firebox?
We can remove most hardened creosote with chemical treatment and mechanical sweeping. Glazed, tar-like creosote is a different animal, it often requires a reline rather than just a cleaning if the underlying flue is compromised. We’ll show you camera footage of what we’re seeing and tell you straight whether cleaning alone solves it or if a liner is the real fix.
Do you service Gelco multi-flue caps damaged by salt corrosion?
Yes. Salt-laden coastal air eats through cap screens and mounting hardware fast in Newport Beach. We replace corroded cap hardware with corrosion-resistant aftermarket components when OEM parts aren’t available, and we regularly service multi-flue caps on larger Peninsula and Newport Coast homes.
Is it worth repairing an older Gelco prefab firebox or should we replace it?
Depends on the condition of the outer jacket and refractory. Cracked refractory panels and worn gaskets are usually repairable, and we’ll do that with the right parts. If the outer steel jacket is cracked or compromised, we say so plainly and quote replacement rather than selling repeated fixes. We’d rather you know the truth than spend money on a firebox that’s past its safe service life. Call (855) 341-3461 for an honest assessment.
